The Aggressively Erotic Art of Apollonia Saintclair

The enigmatic erotic illustrator known as Apollonia Saintclair creates her work out of a sense of pure pleasure. In her own words – “Ink is my blood. I draw for my own sake and for your pleasure.”

Apollonia 11Describing herself as a ”long-time resident of the Old World (Europe),” it’s incredible to think that the technically polished and thematically salacious images Saintclair produces are entirely self-taught and self-cultivated. She only recently began garnering some serious exposure via her Tumblr account.

Her kinky ink drawings are filled with masturbatory scenes, bondage, tentacle-embraced women, and other various erotica. Inspired by literature as well as the bold visual appeal of comics and graphic novels, Apollonia’s major theme is obviously an exploration of female sexuality dancing the line of the grotesque. With added elements of severed heads, insects, and tentacles, her art definitely has a phantasmagorical twist.

Apollonia 24The grotesque is an alphabet to me, a bestiary deeply rooted in our unconscious. A spider or a cow’s head are more than simple accessories in a role-play. These are archetypes developed throughout history of mankind, totems which activate feelings, associations and a whole submerged world, which is an integral part of our collective memory. If I draw a woman with a cat’s head, is that a scene of bestiality, a superhero or an Egyptian goddess? Or all that at the same time?
