Mimi Yoon is an LA-area artist whose art enchants and seduces the audience into her stormy and vulnerable in-between world. She is the founder of Artist Art Academy, which teaches drawing and painting to kids from 1st through 12th grades, including portfolio preparation for those applying to art colleges. Mimi has a BFA in graphic design from California State University Long Beach, but didn’t begin perusing painting until after she founded the Artist Art Academy.
Working in acrylic paint or charcoal, the women she paints typically have a coy or longing appearance. There are a variety of emotions and personalities at play within her body of work: Some lure you in, others attempt to shut you out, but all are equally beautiful. At first glance, Mimi’s work reads as self portraiture; however, the majority of her female icons are pulled from emotion and story rather than from a true representation of a living person. They have a sense of dangerous sensuality and strength as well as vulnerability and honesty. With titles like “Misfit,” “One Size Fits All,” and “Between Here and There,” the viewer of her work has an open-ended story to connect within their mind, making the paintings even more compelling.
When she isn’t painting, Mimi can usually be found curating art shows and contributing to local charities, with the goal of using the arts to bring raw, honest humanity into the realm of community.
