Art Profile: Xavier Collette

Xavier Collette is a digital artist residing in Rennes, France. Born in Belgium, he was an extremely creative child. Throughout his schooling, he would often get in trouble for drawing on any surface he could, including desks, walls, notebooks, and even tablecloths at restaurants… no surface was spared.

tumblr_mbhvllRlww1qhttpto1_1280As he became a young adult, although this need was still there, he abandoned this passion to “learn.” Sine, cosine, natural logarithms, theorems of Pythagoras, all these scary words that haunt the minds of students hating math pleased him. A curriculum that took him to the edge of engineering studies; but the urge to scribble, hatching, drawing -she was there again. Unable to contain it, he left the great mathematical delusions to return to what had always been his great passion: drawing. A few years later, he left the School of Arts of St. Luke, in the small town of Liege, with a degree in graphic design.

His artwork can easily be described as dark fantasy, with nods to mythology, Lewis Carroll stories, and European fairy tales. Flashes of vibrant color and excellent use of chiaroscuro are common within his pieces. While his subject matter varies in his illustrations, all have a sense of tragedy waiting around the corner.

Xavier has been illustrating and designing characters not only for himself, but for books and games as well. He has been a contributing artist for games such as the role-playing game Kuro, Might & Magic X: Legacy (2014) and Might & Magic: Duel of Champions (2012), as well as books including The Cat Who Was Afraid of Shadows and Alice in Wonderland.
