We love Halloween, which is why we know you already know all the standard Halloween songs for your October playlist. No one who reads Dirge needs us to tell them to put on Screamin’ Jay Hawkins or The Ghostbusters Theme. You probably already have a playlist of Halloween standards, and you’ve probably been playing it since September. But we wanted to do something special for you—a Halloween playlist you’d need hours to put together. A playlist you can play in your car, on your phone, or on your TV. A playlist like you’ve never seen. That’s right, we put together three straight hours of creepy, spooky, and killer punk songs for Halloween! And you know what else we did? We made our Halloween Punk & Postpunk playlist with 57 songs and not a single fucking one is by The Misfits.
That’s right! Not ONE.
No shade to The Misfits. But everyone who listens to punk and loves Halloween has The Misfits on their playlist. We wanted to bring you a mix of old and new Halloween punk & post punk that isn’t the same old/same old. Are there a few that are only “Halloweeny” if you don’t pay attention to the message? Sure. But if everyone in North America can put “Zombie” by the Cranberries on their Halloween mix, we can throw in some Dead Pioneers, Bad Cop Bad Cop, and other cool shit (and you can bother to listen to the message. In fact, we’d appreciate it if you did). We included some standard psychobilly, Talking Heads, and The Cramps (we’re not monsters) and brought in some new shit we think should live on Halloween playlists forever – Like “Worms” by Viagra Boys and “Red Bellied Black Snake” by The Beefs.
